Doctors are often taught that placebos will have only a small effect for a short time on illnesses.
This is generally accurate when applied to purely structural disorders, with some notable exceptions.
However, when symptoms are generated by the brain in the absence of structural damage, all one might need is a strong placebo effect to turn off those circuits and completely reverse the symptoms.
There are four key aspects of the placebo effect:
- Having a reasonable explanation for what is causing the problem.
- Having a specific treatment or approach to address the issue.
- Having a caring provider who believes in the efficacy of their treatment model.
- Having hope and optimism for getting better.
